Stuart
Brisley Selected Works 1969-2009
13 - 17 November 2012 Private View
Thursday 15 November, 6–8pm
Mummery + Schnelle is pleased to announce that we are now representing,
in collaboration with Domo Baal, the work of artist Stuart Brisley.
Brisley is widely regarded as a key figure of British performance
art. In a career now reaching into its sixth decade, he has unflinchingly
probed the political, cultural and social mores of his times. From
his early projects in 60s post-war Germany to his pioneering archival
Peterlee Project 1976-1977, from his recurring engagement with the
politics of Northern Ireland to his more recent critique of the British
monarchy and systems of power, Brisley’s art, wholly international
in scope, conveys a profound and singular voice, one that increasingly
reaches out in its influence to a younger generation of artists working
today.
Brisley is best known for performances that often involved considerable
feats of stamina and endurance. But his is a diverse practice that
engages with the most traditional of forms, including sculpture, photography
and painting, enriching his enduring relationship with the body as
subject, tool and instrument. A Bigger Splash: Painting
After Performance now open at Tate Modern feature smaterial related
to two important Brisley performances from the 1970s, Artist as
Whore enacted at Gallery House in London in 1972, and Moments
of Decision/Indecision performed at the Teatra Studio, Warsaw
in 1975.
To coincide with the opening of A Bigger Splash and to mark
the beginning of our working relationship with Stuart Brisley, Mummery
+ Schnelle is pleased to present from 13-17 November a selection of
important historical and recent works by him. This will include painting,
drawing and photography alongside films of two performances from the
1990s, Red, Black and White and Sweating the Whole.
