Philip Akkerman 29 February - 12 April 2008 Private view Thursday 28 February, 6-8 pm Mummery + Schnelle is pleased to present the latest installment of Philip Akkerman’s on-going series of self-portraits. Since 1981 Akkerman has painted nothing but himself, over 2,400 portraits so far. His exhibition at Mummery + Schnelle will consist of paintings made between 2005 and the beginning of 2008. Writer and curator Jennifer Thatcher recently asked: Is he wearing a mask – a death mask? Might Akkerman have stumbled upon the mirror of Jean Cocteau’s Orpheus, the portal to the murky Zone of death? Which one of these Akkermans is he? Or is he all of them? How little this schizophrenic hall of Akkermans reveals about the nature of self! Is he being punished for this vain and pointless enterprise, condemned to travel aimlessly through his subconscious in Dante-esque circles of Hell? * Philip Akkerman was born in Vaassen, The Netherlands in 1957. He studied at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts, The Hague from 1976-78 and at Ateliers ’63 in Haarlem from 1979-81.
